Rehabilitation
The Royal Mint has been recently rehabilitated and its Museum has been open to the public since June 2012. The Ministry of Culture awarded the restoration project carried out by the City Council of Segovia the second prize “Ciudades Patrimonio de la Humanidad” [World Heritage Cities]. The jury highlighted the great magnitude of the intervention, the scrupulous respect for the landscape, the architecture and the history of the architectural complex.
The building showed an advance state of deterioration as a consequence of its manufacturing inactivity since the year 1968. The rehabilitation has entailed a long process initiated between the years 1989 and 2001, when the City Hall of Segovia undertook the necessary steps to purchase the building.
In 1998, the local, regional and national governments formalised a protocol of collaboration to commence the rehabilitation project. Two years later, the Royal Mint was declared “Asset of Cultural Interest”.
During the year 2002, the three administrations executed a contigent of urgent care strategies with the aim of strengthening the most deteriorated parts of the building.
In the year 2004, Gerencia y Proyectos SL delivered their Execution Plan for the rehabilitation of the building. For its performance, the team of architects was advised by the Scientific Committee of the Royal Mint Foundation in all the matters related to the history of the complex and the functioning of the original hydraulic machines and its placement and the channel exterior system.
The rehabilitation works of the building were carried out between the years 2007 and 2011.
